About ADHD/EFD

WHAT IS ATTENTION DEFICIT HYPERACTIVITY DISORDER (ADHD)

ADHD is a common disorder that affects almost 10% of children and adults.  There are three sub-types of ADHD:

1) Inattentive - Symptoms include lack of focus and motivation, difficulty paying attention to detail, failing to stay on topic, being forgetful and distracted, not listening, frequently losing things and day-dreaming.

2) Hyperactive - Symptoms include excessive talking, interrupting, restless and frequent fidgeting, impulsivity.

3) Combination - Symptoms include inattention and hyperactivity.

ADHD has nothing to do with intelligence or talent.  It is a neurobiological condition. Studies suggest that ADHD is genetic.  In fact, many adults self-diagnose as having ADHD after their children have been diagnosed.

We typically think of medication as the only treatment for ADHD symptoms but there are so many more options.  Medication is not the "magic pill" to fix the majority of ADHD symptoms and is rarely adequate treatment.  Coaching can provide clients with additional resources to manage ADHD symptoms. Coaching teaches clients organization, prioritization, planning and goal setting skills that pills alone can not.

WHAT IS EXECUTIVE FUNCTION DISORDER (EFD)

Executive functions are a set of skills that help us get things done. Think of these functions as the set of skills of an effective corporate CEO.

Executive functions include:

1) Organizing

2) Focusing and sustaining attention

3) Maintaining alertness

4) Modulating emotions

5) Memory and recall

6) Motivation

The over-lap in symptoms can be confusing.

To clarify, someone with ADHD most likely has EFD but someone with EFD may not have ADHD.

A professional diagnosis is not necessary  for you to engage in coaching.  If you are struggling with the above symptoms then coaching can help you.
